Projector Issues

Post by mynameisbob »

Hi, I've recently just started shooting in Super 8mm format after being a Video Cameraman and stills photographer for nearly 10 years. Im finding it very exciting, and love all the gear and cameras etc..

I've just bought a Cinerex super 8 projector from eBay. I plan in future to get proper film to tape transfers, but i wanted a cheap projector to view the film as it arrived back from the lab.

The thing is when i project it, Im not seeing a complete frame. I can see a bit of the frame previous, as if the shutter in the projector is opening at the wrong time. Also sometimes i cant see a proper image at all, its just looks like a blur as the film travels past the gate.

what do you think is wrong?

Is it something i need to do like Give the projector and the film path a thorough cleaning? is so how? Do I need to clean and lubricate the film? is so how? I am new to filming and projecting so obviously i may make a few rookie errors. Maybe its a cheapo projector and i need something decent?

When i view the film on my Rank Elektra Editor everthing looks fine on film, no jumps or jitters.

sounds like you need to align it. There's usually an alignment lever somewhere on the projector, look for it.

Hi,

look for a knob labeled "Framer", "Frame", "Frame adjust" or "Adjust" and turn it to fix your problem. It should be located near the lens (normally right below it).
Sometimes that knob hasn't got any label at all or only an icon that shows a (partially covered) picture.

E.g. Bauer T610-projector:
Turn the "Framer"-knob when you can't see the whole picture and turn the "Focus"-knob when you the picture isn't sharp:

E.g. Bolex SM 8:
Move the white lever below the film-gate up or down when you can't see the whole picture and turn the front of the lens when you the picture isn't sharp:
