SOT - Any retro video gamers here?

i was always a sucker for the SIT DOWN version of the star wars X wing fighter game...they had a stand up version too but it just wasn''t the same...I can still hear Obi Wan saying "Use the Force Luke" - ultra ultra cool...simple line graphics but oh what my imagination would conjure up flying that game for what seemed like forever...I still want one in my home.

That and asteroids where the gravity was on and you kept getting sucked to the sides, etc...I love blasting rocks!

Now, on PS2, Ghost Recon is pretty cool, I have to admit...I love playing it in two player assist mode...very fun...

That X-wing game and rest of the star wars vector games are included on Gamecube's Star Wars Rogue Squadron 3: Rebel Assault or something like that. But I've played the good old sit down myself. PS-2 does has some worthwhile games, mostly the Metal Gear Solid series but it's also interesting playing the older original Metal Gear on the MSX/NES. But I'm mostly a star wars video game junkie. Gotta love the SNES games, so frustratingly hard. Also Legend of Zelda.

I also have an original NES with two light guns. Duck Hunt is awesome. I have to say, my favorite games on SNES were Chrono Trigger, FFVI, Zelda, and Super Mario World (tied with Yoshi's Island - fantastic hand drawn graphics).

As far as recent games, the MGS series, Gran Turismo, and Square RPGs are probably at the top. I can't really get into American-made games. The UK stuff has more style or intelligence (GTA for PSP should be awesome).

I'm not into gaming these days at all, like PlayStation, XBox, blah blah blah. I only like....excuse me...LOVE, the original NES, and mine still works. 2 Original controllers and 1 light gun for Duck Hunt (which I never play). In no particular order, my favorite games are:

I noticed once on Reflex's website that a company was making, or going to be making a console that played the original NES cartridges, and it was going to retail for like $60 or something. Anybody have anymore info on that?

And Freaks & Geeks is seriously one THEE best show ever. I recommend anybody that was between 10 & 20 years old during the 80's should buy the 1 and only season. Excellent. and yes, episode entitled "Tests And Breasts" was the one with an 8mm porno. What a riot.

Gotta love the retro games!! I still have all my original consoles and it all started with my Atari 2600 and all my many cartridges. Yes they all still work, sometimes you have to give a little nudge to 'em but that whips them back into shape. Have many old Computer games as well, talk about creative and imaginative, love the original graphicless infocom games such as Zork and Deadline.....don't get me started....then onto the interactive RPG's of Police Quest, Space Quest, and Kings Quest, yup still have all of them and still haven't finished them all. I could go on for days about the retro games I love and still play(when I have time....which seems to be once every 3-6 months)! And into the modern age the newest console I have would be the PS1(eight years old....Retro???), with a bunch of games for it that I still haven't finished.

They're called Messiah Entertainment, and the delivery date keeps slipping a few weeks at a time. They're currently aiming to start shipping early next week. I suspect they're having compatibility probs with some of the most demanding NES games -- their system is actually a high-speed emulator.

Personally, I like the new Atari Flashback 2.0 (NOT to be confused with the craptastical original model). It contains tons of old Atari games and is actually a hardware recreation of the real thing.

I also like the Commodore 30 in 1 joystick -- It's an FPGA system-on-a-chip recreation of the original C-64. Some people have even hacked disk drives and keyboards into it:

Back in the day we had ZX Spectrum, Mac SE and later Megadrive... In retrospect tho I've since played lots of NES and SNES... SNES is amazing...

I need to get myself a new NES, i broke mine circuitbending it!

These days I obsessively play only the two Halo games on my housemate's X-Box! So playable, due to the perfection of the game engine.... shame they didn't get round to actually finishing the levels, or giving the 2nd game an ending!

But if I try and other 1st person shooter it just seems inferior...

I played GTA a bit but got too annoyed by how clunky it was when you got out of the car, compared to the amazingness of the actual driving.

I can't deal with most games these days... there are of course some realy good ones (mostly nintendo of course) but the industry seems really stagnent... every new console just has the same old games with fancier graphics + more polygons... with the same old linear, uninspired gameplay aimed at 20something 'gamer' otaku culture rather than actual people who might wanna play games!



Played both Carmageddon games a lot, great fun. Roger, these are the true successor to your Death Race 2000 arcade machine... it's pretty much an unofficial game of the movie. And the mothers were still complaining, so various versions around the world have you running over zombies, robots etc rather than humans....

It's funny you mention the shooting in the back roger. In the game 'Return to Castle Wolfenstein', there's a part where you have to shoot a nazi in the back, while he's listening to a piece of classical music (no, not Wagner, something really nice). You're shooting a nazi, that must be good. But wait, you're also shooting an 'person', a 'human being' who likes art etc. in the back! Moral dilemma never really used to be part of computer games, seems like this is changing.

I'm glad you and Roger mentions this.
Even if one knows it's not reality, it happens in his mind, right?

There are better things to imagine than shooting someone in his back.
It's not good for your mind.

Duke Nukem (the platform game)
Duke Nukem 3d

But I changed my opininon about these games..
Too much killing, too much blood, too much sadism.
We have already enough of this in real life.

Remember playing Tic Tac Toe in the schools super computer in 81, and never got into the Vic 20's tape loading games... However I'm still looking for a disk with "Sun Tzu's Art of War at Sea" (Original disk's damaged) in Blazing CGA Graphics.

I programmed some games on Vic-20. That's a long time ago and I was a schoolboy who barely had learned to speak English yet. I still have the machine but it will only run for about 10mins before crashing.

I could still pick up a game of International Karate II on C-64, but that's mainly for the music.

I did spend a lot of time as a young kid playing arcade games.

On PC I played tetris, doom and Duke Nukem (original platform).

I then stopped playing untill a few years ago when forming a guild with some friends in Dark Age Of Chamelot. That lasted for about a year for me and I stoped because it took too much of my time to be a good gamer. But the guild lives on in World of Warcraft, but none of the founding members are really active.

I find gaming to be a passive form of entertainment, which steals time from me where I could be creative instead (like television which I rarely watch).

I was a lot into the C=64 in the 80s, did a lot of graphics in those days, I did the graphic-conversion for 'Soul Crystal' http://www.c64.com/detail.php?gameid=100383 (anybody know or remember this game? ). Today I sometimes play M.U.L.E. on an emulator, I think the concept of this game is timeless, it is one of the best games ever. Play it with some friends! Archon is also an alltime classic.
I have some vintage consoles (Atari 2600, Vectrix). The Vectrix is very cool, I think it was the best console ever. Minestorm is a hit.

I liked that "winter games" on C64 where you punshed the hell out of two keys on the keyboard to get you man to move. And those cool little Game'n'Watch.

If you remember what the late 1970 early 1980 was like in school you should see this. It is universal even though it's an american tv-show. it's must se tv!!!

I also remember playing streetfighter for 10 hours with a friend of mine, but all i would do was highkicks (jump+kick). It was the same movement over and over. I had that jumping motion in my head all night, couldn't sleep at all. :lol:

I'm not into modern computer/video games, but love older consoles, particularly those by Sega. I pulled out my Mega Drive (aka Genesis) and Master System a few days ago, for the first time in a while, and it has been a bit of fun.

Just wondering if anyone else here shares this interest?

Never had the chance to get a Sega but have owned an Atari VCS, and still have the Colecovision ( remember that one?) the Vectrex, Nintendo Gameboy/Snes/N64, the Panasonic 3DO. Computers ( for gaming ) included an Amstard CPC 64, and later an Amiga A500.

Looking back it was a complete waste of my youth and what a spoilt teenager I was.

Nowadays I have really gone off gaming, only rarely have a go on the emulators to play my favorite arcade games on my PC.

It's amazing how real todays games are in terms of graphic resolution, but still the game play is the same old formula repeated again.
