My Scoopic DS8 has arrived!!!

Post by Actor »

Plus
  • It's beautiful. Pristine. Looks new. Case is in fine shape too.
  • There are two jacks in the rear that do not appear in the photos in the manual. Ergo, obviously modifications. PCs?
  • Manual in fine condition.
  • Lots more features than my 16mm Scoopic.
Neutral
  • Two 100 foot spools of film, still sealed, were included. One is 50D (16 2R) and the other is 100T (16 1R). 99% certain these are 16mm, not DS8. No matter. I'll shoot them with my 16mm Scoopic. Or sell them on eBay.
Negative
  • Take up reel missing! Can I use the take up reel from my 16mm Scoopic? Or do I have to sacrifice a reel of Foma?
  • Noisiest camera I own. Noisier than my 16mm Scoopic.

most likely. or you can ask your lab for a few. i could send you a truckload or two since i always ask to have them back from processing, but i'm sure you can find them locally. or are ds8 reels different at all? they shouldn't be but i've only seen them and never shot any so i never took notice.

16mm reels are what you want. I bought an old box of Kodachrome for like $1, unspooled the film and binned it, and just use that for take-up.

Capital idea! I should have thought of that myself. I have a test roll of Tri-x that I shot when I first bought the 16mm. No further need for it. I'll use that.

One more Negative
  • The light meter needle is bent so that (1)it's out of focus and (2)it's about 4 stops off.

Welcome to the club.

I bought one off ebay about 4 years ago...couldn't resist, and it was an impulse buy it now ( or never ) as well.

Don't trust that auto meter too much I have heard, even if it's not bent.

The noise, it's frightening! Sounds more like a old sewing machine than a film camera, don't even try shooting sync sound with this baby.

What noise?? My Canon DS8 is almost as silent as my Canon 1014 XL-S, for me K-3 sounds like sewing machine, not my Canon DS8.

Did you have yours lubed? It can't be as quiet as a 1014 XL-S.

My Canon DS8 was pretty quiet too. The only setting that scared me was the Slo MO...now that was a racket!!

Lightmeter blows. Sllllooooowwww.

I have two. One with a busted meter. Big deal. I'd rather not have that thing going all haywire on me all the time anyway.

After reading this topic I put both of them side by side and started them. My 1014 XL-S is little more quiet than my Canon DS8, there isn't big difference. Maybe my DS8 has been lubed, I bought it 1.5 years ago, the seller didn't tell me anything about it.
Best Regards

I had a Barney made for mine by custom upholstery in California. It makes it quieter but does not eliminate sound.

have fun with your camera!!

and check http://groups.yahoo.com/group/doublesuper8/ for some news on available film. Looks like there's something going on recently. (even though I'm sure you've been there already)

No, I haven't been there. Yahoo wants a credit card number and I'm not about to give that to them.

Is there something besides K-40 and Foma? Francis was trying to get together an order for 100T but it's been some time and I assume that's either a done deal or else he gave up. He hasn't answered my eMail.

do they really need it?? when I joined (early this year) they didn't ask it, but maybe now it's changed.

Nothing special actually, but there's a guy in england who bought a perfing machine and is trying to have some unperfed film. He wants to try his machine on some ORWO b/w first (because of low price, I guess), but in the meantime it seems he's trying to get some film from Fuji (and other brands) as well, and this looks much more interesting to me.

Don't know, I hope he will make it, somehow.

yeah, unfortunately the vision order didn't go through.
