quarz-zoom ds8-3 help

Post by tomharris »

Hi, I'm currently living in Prague, and I unexpectedly came across a quarz-zoom ds8-3 in a camera shop. I don't know a thing about how it works or anything like that. I saw that filmbuff already responded to a similar question, but I still have a couple questions not already answered in that post.

What is the dial with numbers from 12-23 and DIN on it, and how does it function? Also, how do I load the film? I have Fomapan R ISO100/21° film.

As you can likely tell, I'm an ultranovice with this stuff, but if any of you could help me out with this stuff, I'd be extra grateful. Thanks!

21 on the Fomapan film is the DIN number and equivalent to 100ASA. This must be what the dial is for (if you choose to use the camera's auto exposure)

You might be able to find a comparison chart somewhere online...

Hi,

you got a very fine camera! I use the Quarz DS8 and Quarz 5 , too.
Also you should know, that processing in Prague is very cheap, just bring the exposed film back to the foma shop. Processing for a 10m roll R100 only costs around 6,00 Euro there.

Some infos about the camera:

Great, glad to hear it! It only cost like 10 dollars, so I felt like I had to get it.

Do you think you could tell me how to load the film? I was expecting the film to come in a cartridge, but it's a spool. As such, I've really no idea how to do it.

Thanks for the site, too!

Sheeish, at that price for processing, you don't need to use that little camera's light meter.

Just practice guessing the exposure, or use an external light meter, even another camera's meter to give you confidence.

I wouldn't trust that old meter... unless it conformed to my tests and judgement...

I have a DS8 and Reg 8 Quartz too... cool cameras....

Here is a 14mb clip of mine camera in action...

and I used the paper guide that came with the film to figure out the exposure

i have two of these models, and when trying to shoot with foma r100 the spring sounds very weird, like unstable or with variable speed or sth like this. but, what surprised me after developing, all film was perfectly registered... russian technique is best :)

Hi,

the ISO-film-speed-declaration consists of the "old ASA"-part (100 in case of your Fomapan) and the "old DIN"-part (21 in case of your Fomapan):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_speed
In other words: The dial with "DIN" on it is for setting the film's speed ;)
