"I don't - I only transfer it to video, hence the film never gets projected"
my films get project via digital projection

Other - I guess.
1. Shoot crystal synced. Take up sound on DAT. Use a slate. (If shooting a music video preferably use a "smart slate" synced to smpte from audio device with the song.)
2. Scan silent film.
2. Edit film in computer. Add soundtrack from Dat. (on left channel with smpte code on right channel, if smpte code on slate, use this to sync) Output digital version of the film.
3. Edit material IRL with bolex splicer to match digital version. (minus digital FX)
4. Post stripe.
5. Record SMPTE LTC* code on sound stripe(s). (use a midi-interface with smpte write capabilities for this task)
6. Play soundtrack from computer interlocked to SMPTE code on sound stripes in projetor.
Picture from film in projector, audio from computer. Maximum pictures quality. No sound quality limitations. Your soundcard sets the boundaries.
Beautiful.
Comment: The only method you can push stop mid-film, rewind projector and push play again and the soundtrack still is in sync, except the obvious, having the real sound on the stripes...
*Longitudal Time-Code.
However I can not take the credit for this idea, I believe Mattias and his brother are more entitled to it.

Shouldn't that just be (Boo!) if you're using digital, Clive?clivetobin wrote:Since Kodak has discontinued it I just shoot Digital8 or MiniDV now on the rare occasions when I shoot anything that needs sound. (Boo! Hiss!)

I will check "other" I guess. When I attempt to record & sync my audio on location, I record the audio onto my Sony VX2100 camera while I shoot the film with my Nikon R10. I then sync it up in Premiere Pro. Since my Super8 camera isn't crystal sync'd I have to do some tweaking in post to get a good looking sync. I haven't done too much of this, but the following link shows a clip where I used this method for a couple short segments. I've posted this clip in the past, so some of you may have seen it before. For others, it may be new footage. Enjoy!

(if you listen real close you may be able to hear the Nikon chugging away in the background
)
I don't really project my Super8 film. I have a couple times but it's only after I've transferred it to DV. If I ever project my Super8 stuff, it's usually from a DV tape or DVD on my DLP projector.

There could still be hiss if there is a very poor mic preamp, or an angry boa constrictor in the shot...Alastair wrote:Shouldn't that just be (Boo!) if you're using digital, Clive?clivetobin wrote:Since Kodak has discontinued it I just shoot Digital8 or MiniDV now on the rare occasions when I shoot anything that needs sound.
