Re: Film in a landfill

As a kid, I would weekly dig through the dumpster of the local multiplex to get film. Almost without fail, I would come away with a garbage bag full of unwound trailers and odd bits of features. One had to be careful as the dumpster was very slick with popcorn "butter". The smell at the height of ...

Re: 16 mm. What camera to buy

I'd go with a Bolex. Easy enough to use for straight shooting, and you can do just about anything with it. I think its only downside is that it isn't nearly robust as say a B&H filmo, but mine have taken some pretty hard slams and survived.

I was always a little let down by the scoopic. It felt ...

Re: First Test Reel with Bolex H16 - LOST LOOP!

the very early nonreflex h16s don't have the release button to open the loop formers when you close the door. Ruined my first roll on one of these by doing this. To Bolex's credit, they did include a small cutout in the door that 'should only fit' if the loop formers are open as you close the door ...

Great work-I too have moved away from super 8 and now shoot all of my stuff on my H8s. Just got back some plus-x and it looks great.

Re: Sticky shutter! On Canon 814XL-s

Yup, your shutter should still be turning just fine when you pull the trigger. The shutter is sort of like a 3 bladed fan:
if you were facing the fan head on, in normal mode you would see just a one-bladed fan-the other two are hiding behind the first one. The other two come out to play as you ...

Re: Sticky shutter! On Canon 814XL-s

Okay, there is a discrete motor used to drive the shutter to outdoors (180 degree shutter) to closed (zero degrees). I believe there are three shutter blades to allow the three different configurations. This motor sits astride the massive drive motor that runs the film through the camera. It faces ...

Re: Sticky shutter! On Canon 814XL-s

Great find! I have worked with these before-mostly because we had problems finding a reputable person to work on these. When you try to open/close the shutter, do you hear a whirring motor? That should be the camera straining to reopen to shutter. If you don't then you have a pretty simple issue ...

Re: Elmo 1012 filter switch

I got your email and just happened to see your post here, so I'll be lazy and just reply here....

Are you saying that the switch just fell off of the side of the camera? Or was someone monkeying around with the insides and some camera guts have vanished? If the latter, you'll probably need to find ...

Re: My Bolex is Fried

Ive had similar experiences with two Bolexes. These were both the later 1960s models, one reflex, one non. Both had pretty much the same fundamental flaw-failure of the stop pin on the spring motor. Compared to the older models without the registration pin; the newer cams are under an incredible ...

Re: Dev times Daylight tank vs G3

What stock are you using?

As for the agitation, just running the rewind tank is enough-you won't need to pick it up and shake it about and such. Actually, agitation in that tank is a little too efficient, as the chemicals can quickly oxidize in it.

Camera Stores Closing in Your Town?

Folks,

After about ninety years in business, my town just had a very nice camera store close its doors. From where we had six photo dealers in town five to ten years ago, we now have one. Even the Wolf/Ritz/Cutler mall formatted stores are all gone here. I was just wondering if this is just a ...

The Snapper mower article mentions at the end that they went through a couple of buyouts and are now owned by Briggs and Stratton...don't they make lawnmowers for Walmart?

George,

Is this the cinephonic model? I have had an interest in these cameras for a long while, although I do not own one of my own. Please post some pictures of what you have-I would love to see some pics and description of the recelled battery! Since you're saying that the magazine isn't working ...

My dad had one of the first mass produced 8 track players in his mustang (ford was the first to really introduce 8 tracks to the public). He bought about a dozen tapes (all lear jet packs) and spent most of 1969 rocking out to them. Sadly, that summer, he developed a habit of tossing the tapes into ...
