Yes, it's damn expensive to shoot on 16mm and larger format in Japan.
Like you mentioned, it is about 4 times more expensive than the USA for processing. The price of the film stock in Japan is about the same in the USA, though.

It's out of topic, but. . .
Kodak,Japan rep. told me that Ektachrome has more sales than K40 in Japan because there is one lab in Tokyo that process Ektachrome very quickly(E-6, though).

SPD card(solid state memory card) is announced at the NAB 2003 by Panasonic. Panasonic is planning to ship them around Spring 2004.

Panasonic will produce SPD camcorder next year.
SPD card is made of 4 x 1GB SD cards and the size of SPD card is the same as PC card.
