Re: c-mount macro lens for Telecine choices
That's time saving information, Frank. I bought two sets of extension tubes and thought I'd find the proper distance via experimentation. I finally received my M39>M42 adaptor from Hong Kong (under $6 with free shipping to the USA- I know it's just a tiny bit of threaded aluminum, but how do they ...

Re: Backlight for Telecine- LED RGB?
Frank,
Did you happen to do any comparison tests of the aperture settings with the lens facing forwards? I'm going to be using a 1/3" CCD camera, and I think you said using the lens forwards was the best way to do it in that case. Of course I can experiment once I get my camera, but if you happen ...

Re: Backlight for Telecine- LED RGB?
Frank,
I have decided to do the telecine project in phases. I'm collecting the optics and backlight supplies first, tidying up my projector drive mechanism, then I'll buy the camera and test it on my Mac. If everything proves satisfactory and I can scrape up the cash, I'll go for a dedicated ...

Re: Backlight for Telecine- LED RGB?
Frank- I'll continue the OT lens discussion here as I started it as an aside in the backlight thread. I've already ordered all the various adapters I need. The 42mm to C mount adapter was the second most expensive bit, but I found a source for $30 USD. I don't know if the friend you're helping is in ...

Re: Backlight for Telecine- LED RGB?
Thanks, christoph. CTB gels on the backlight side it is.

Re: Backlight for Telecine- LED RGB?
halogen with some CTB gels (or a 80A filter) is a surprisingly good option, since you can take advantage of the manufacturers color matching of the ccd bayer filter.
++ christoph
Perhaps this question will reveal me as a total optical ignoramus, but would you use the 80A filter on the backlight ...

Re: Backlight for Telecine- LED RGB?
What kind of wattage should I be looking at for the LEDs?
if you have efficient ones, like the latest rebels, then about 8 at 3W should give you enough output for nice diffusion.
all that said, there's also a non-trivial problem with LEDs color matching. since the light source is very pure ...

Re: Backlight for Telecine- LED RGB?
Monitoring temperature and providing a fixed correction factor (it is pretty much linear) per colour does work well. You should be able to acheive this in an analogue circuit...but watch out for thermal runaway, as Christoph has warned.

Re: Backlight for Telecine- LED RGB?
Nathan,
I purchased a Lighting Science Group (formerly Lamina) Development kit DK-04D0-0394. The kit comes with two LED light engines attached to heat sinks with lenses and the power supply. The RGB kit number is DK-04F0-0396. It's the same light source that's used in the moviestuff line of ...

Re: Backlight for Telecine- LED RGB?
Frank, I did read that section. Your solutions are always very elegant, but perhaps too complicated for me! I could just do an analog servo system (no PWM)... run fiber optic from the LEDs to photo transistors for feedback and a simple op-amp based DC servo which varies the voltage to the LEDs. That ...

Backlight for Telecine- LED RGB?
I did a bit of searching on LED backlights here and kept coming across 40pg threads...spent some time wading through those and then thought I'd ask for help!

Re: c-mount macro lens for Telecine choices
Thanks for the offer, Fred. I know analog electronics well, but Windows computers, machine vision cameras, optics etc. are uncharted territory for me. Off to start a new thread about backlights!

Re: c-mount macro lens for Telecine choices
Unfortunately, the TIS camera is at the top of my potential price bracket... I'm assuming the Point Grey would be even more expensive. Machine vision cameras with firewire outputs and triggers don't seem to turn up second hand too often either....

Re: c-mount macro lens for Telecine choices
I'm looking at the Imaging Source DFK 31BF03. The other alternatives are really nice but too rich for my blood. I'm open to other suggestions, though.
Thanks for the tip on the astro IIDC.

Re: c-mount macro lens for Telecine choices
Well, I happened to find a good deal on the Schneider Comoponon-S lens on e-Bay @ $40, so I took the plunge on that, two extension tube sets a 39/42mm adapter and a 42mm>C-mount adapter. Better yet, certain spouses have authorized the purchase of a machine vision camera!
