I have built an intervalometer. I havn't quite got it working yet, but it's not far off. It's approximate but quite accurate. I guess if I was to make a scale for the potentiometer it could be quite precise. It's built from a simple 555 circuit, a relay and the Canon remote cable.

The Canon XLS models are not crystal synced, from what people have told me they do run more consistent timing than the non sound models. They can be modified by peolpe such as The Film Group .
There are other options too such as pilotone or software syncing, but these may come at a loss of quality ...
