Film Cleaners ?

Hi Folks,

I have used Renovex II for quite a while prepping film for Transfer but it's gotten expensive and difficult to get.

I have tried Edwals for the past 3-4 months and have been having trouble with stray particles on the film interfering with the Transfer.

Does Edwals have weaker anti ...

Thanks Christoph,

Cutting out the bright frames is what I am doing now.
I will check-out avisynth though I do not believe it is Mac compatible.

Any ideas what I can do on a MAC ?

Brightlight,

Sure - I can see your point with well shot footage.

However, with much of this old 8mm family film there will be a series of 1-5 second shots all opening with a flash. It becomes more like going to fireworks than watching a movie :)

Thanks Guys. Now, the 64k question.

Can anything be done to reduce the effect of these bright frames during Transfer ?

Right now I am taking them out one-by-one in the editor - at least the REALLY bright ones. It is quite tedious.

Thanks.

Bright Frames on Old 8mm film

Hi folks,

I transfer old 8mm film for families. I'm hoping to benefit from your collective experience.

I have found that the first frame when a new shot begins is a bit brighter than the rest of that shot. Sometimes much brighter. I have checked the film directly and it seems to be there, not in ...

Thanks ! I mis-typed - I am using Manual Focus. Corrected above.

schoft,
The GL-1 has a 14x Zoom vs. a 12x for the TRV900. Other than that I am incline to agree with you that it is not an upgrade.

super8man,
I am using an LED light source. I'd be interested in how your instructions differ.

I ...

Problem Using Canon GL-1 with Workprinter

Hi Folks,

I am usually a lurker here. I transfer old 8mm and S8 family movies.
I recenty upgraded from a Sony TRV900 to a Canon GL-1.

I am finding the response of the GL-1 to a brighter scene is much slower than the TRV900. The TRV900 adjusts in a frame or two or three. The GL-1 adjusts in 8-10 ...

Thanks Guys !

I appreciate the confirmation that the film quailty was the same between Super8-silent and Super8-sound.

I'd bet the issue is your suggestion about camera quality.

Image quaility of old Super8-Silent vs. Super8-Sound

I've been transferring old R8 and S8 silent for a few years now.

Recently I began transferring old S8-Sound and I've noticed that the image quality is generally inferior to both R8 and S8-Silent.

Perhaps it is just a result of my small sample size but if anyone has any information or ideas I would ...

Where to have old S8 sound film developed

Hi folks,

A customer of mine found some old undeveloped S8 sound film. It is at least 20 years old.

I'd appreciate some suggestions of good places to have it developed ?
Places in the NY Metro area would be best as I am not sure she is
comfortable shipping it but all suggestions are ...

I don't buy them but I have been doing transfers for a growing circle of friends, relatives, acquaintances etc.....

I thought I might occasionally run into something interesting. It hasn't happened yet. I've seen lots of Disney Park footage, tons of birthdays, some weddings and, of course, many ...

Projector Recommendations

Hi,

I'm looking for a Projector with the following characteristics:

1) Can handle both 8mm & Super8.
2) Is durable.
3) Relatively good availability of bulbs, belts etc...
4) Is portable.
5) Can handle sound.

I realize finding all of the above in one machine is not likely but I'd like to get as ...

Roger,

iMovie does have a manual speed change function but it is crude. It allows 2x, 3x, ,5x changes but that is it. When I upgrade to FinalCut Express I will have better control.

On your point, after you scan in mass volume how do you determine the correct speed ? Do you do a visual review ...
